Immediate implant-based breast reconstruction

If a breast must be removed because of cancer, it can be reconstructed during the same surgery under the same anaesthesia. This is a modern surgical approach, which is now widely recognised and oncologically safe.
Immediate breast reconstruction helps to spare the patient’s own skin on the affected breast and, in some cases, even the nipple and areola complex. The affected breast tissue is radically removed and the implant is inserted at the same site. After immediate reconstruction surgery the patient wakes up with a new breast.

• both oncological and reconstructive surgery during one procedure (one anaesthesia, one procedure, one-time stress),
• after the surgery the patient leaves the hospital with a new breast,
• using an implant for reconstruction means that the surgery is limited to one site,
• immediate reconstruction is the only procedure when the patient’s own skin is spared; in some cases the whole nipple-areola complex can be spared,
• after this oncological surgery scars are small and barely visible.

The decision on your surgery is taken during a pre-operative visit when a doctor assesses your eligibility. At the visit the doctor also chooses the treatment and orders necessary tests. The decision is made on the basis of test results and your general condition. Then a convenient date is selected.
