Immediate autologous breast reconstruction

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

The oncological stage of the surgery is similar (radical removal of the cancer tissue) and the space is filled with tissue transferred from other body regions. Usually, breasts are most often reconstructed with tissue from the lower abdomen (TRAM) or from the back (LD). A pedicled flap of skin, fat and muscle is used for the procedure.
The use of subcutaneous fatty tissue for reconstruction means that the reconstructed breast has the shape and consistency similar to the natural breast.

Benefits:

  • both oncological and reconstructive surgery during one procedure,
  • after the surgery the patient leaves the hospital with a reconstructed breast,
  • immediate reconstruction is the procedure when the patient’s own skin is spared; in some cases the whole nipple-areola complex can be spared.

Eligibility:

The decision on your surgery is taken during a pre-operative visit when a doctor assesses your eligibility. At the visit the doctor also chooses the treatment and orders necessary tests. The decision is made on the basis of test results and your general condition. Then a convenient date is selected.

Procedure:

  • the procedure lasts for about 4 to 5 hours (oncological and reconstructive stage),
  • the hospital stay lasts from 3 to 5 days.

FAQ

Is the immediate reconstruction as safe as the delayed procedure?

The evaluation of the patient’s eligibility for the immediate reconstruction ensures the success and safety of the surgery. A properly performed procedure does not extend the hospital stay or recovery period, which is very important for further supplementary oncological treatment.

Which type of procedure should I choose: implant or own tissue?

Each technique has advantages. Using an implant for immediate reconstruction is the simplest way to achieve a good outcome.
The duration of the oncological stage of the surgery is only slightly extended (by 30 to 40 min.). Surgical intervention is limited to the affected breast and no tissue has to be moved from distant sites. Also, the procedure may be performed in a way that leaves small and barely visible scars. The immediate breast reconstruction with an implant is most often selected by patients as a comprehensive form of oncological treatment.
On the other hand, own tissue can also be used for immediate reconstruction. The use of tissue from the lower abdomen only (TRAM) or the back (LD) ensures more natural breast consistency, gives better long-term outcomes and does not require the use of artificial implants.
