Transurethral urinary bladder resection (TURB)

Indications and contraindications

  Indications:
  • tumour in the urinary bladder confirmed on an ultrasound scan, tomography or cystoscopy.
  Contraindications:
  • significant coagulopathy (blood clotting disorders).

Treatment options:

This is an endoscopic procedure during which pathological lesions are removed from the bladder with the use of a resectoscope. The removed tissue is sent for histopathology tests for microscopic evaluation.

Eligibility:

Your eligibility for the procedure will be evaluated by a specialist in urology on the basis of your medical history, imaging tests (ultrasound, CT, MRI) or on the basis of cystoscopy.

Before the procedure:

  • Two weeks before the procedure you should have the following blood tests done: full blood count, electrolyte test, coagulation test, blood type, glucose, creatinine, Hbs antigen, ANTI-HCV,
  • consultation with an anaesthetist,
  • urinalysis and urine culture,
  • additional imaging tests (MRI, CT, skeletal scintigraphy) in high-risk cases / relapse cases,
  • anticoagulant medications should be discontinued 2 to 7 days before the procedure, depending on individual medications.

Procedure:

The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia. A resectoscope is introduced into the bladder through the urethra and abnormal tumour tissue is removed.
After the procedure a Foley catheter is left in the urethra for irrigation.

After the procedure:

  • the catheter is left for 1 to 4 days until the urine is clear,
  • further treatment depends on histopathology results,
  • oral antibiotic therapy (if necessary) is administered for 3 to 5 days,
  • we recommend continuous monitoring of your condition for oncological lesions in the urinary tract: an ultrasound scan and cystoscopy every 3 months after the procedure.
