SmartSight

SmartSight

Smartsight, an innovative procedure that does not involve corneal flap formation, is performed using the world’s most state-of-the-art SCHWIND ATOS laser system.

A lenticule is created in the intrastromal tissue of the cornea and it is subsequently removed through a small incision.

This precise and gentle method does not involve corneal flap formation or laser ablation, as does LASIK. As such, SmartSight is the least invasive laser vision correction procedure.

A shorter eye healing time after the procedure is an indisputable benefit of the SmartSight method.

Benefits

  • With an intelligent eye-tracking system, the procedure is safe and is performed exactly at the planned site.
  • It is the least invasive procedure available on the market.
  • SmartSight ensures treatment precision and tissue sparing.
  • The method offers quick full recovery.

Indications and contraindications

  Indications
  • myopia (nearsightedness) of up to -10 D
  • astigmatism of up to 5 D
  Contraindications
  • Unstable refractive error, which is a change in required visual correction by at least 0.5 Diopter over the last 6-12 months
  • Poor general condition. Systemic diseases which are contraindications to the procedure include connective tissue diseases and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus or psoriasis
  • Eye diseases including glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure), cataract (clouding of the lens) and conjunctivitis, keratitis or other inflammatory conditions of the eye Other eye conditions such as dry eye syndrome or severe keratoconus (bulging cornea)
  • If you are pregnant, you need to reschedule your procedure until at least 4 months after delivery or the end of breastfeeding
  • You should avoid having the procedure while on certain medication such as oral steroids, since they compromise the body’s healing and defence mechanisms
  • Age under 18 years

Evaluation for surgery

During an evaluation visit, the doctor will perform a full ophthalmic examination:

  • Your uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity will be determined for both eyes.
  • Eye drops will be administered which paralyse eye accommodation and dilate the pupils.

Important! You may have a blurred vision for a few hours after receiving the drops and you should not drive during that time.

  • Other eye conditions and systemic diseases will be excluded that may disqualify you from the procedure.
  • After reviewing your results, taking detailed measurements of your cornea (its shape, curvature and thickness) and determining your pupil size, your doctor will recommend a suitable type of surgery to you. This is the best time to bring up any uncertainties and doubts associated with the procedure with the ophthalmologist.

Evaluation for the procedure at the St. Adalbert’s Hospital consists of two stages: ophthalmic examination and optometric examination.
Based on the ophthalmic examination, the ophthalmologist determines the patient’s eligibility for a given laser vision correction procedure.

The optometric examination is used to establish precise values necessary for the planning of the laser procedure. The examination takes place on the day of the surgery.

Important!
You should not use your contact lenses for 7 days before the evaluation visit, since they affect the shape and condition of the cornea.

The procedure

A femtosecond laser is used to create a predefined lenticule in the intrastromal tissue of the cornea. A small peripheral incision is made in the top layer of the cornea in order to create access to the lenticule and to remove it.

The whole procedure takes about a few minutes.

After the procedure

  • Use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops as recommended by the doctor.
  • Use sunglasses when outside in the sun for about 3 months.

You will have your first follow-up examination immediately after the procedure. On the day of the surgery you will stay with us a total of about 2 hours; an optometric examination will also be performed before the procedure. On the first few days after the procedure you should strictly follow your doctor’s instructions regarding medication and follow-up visits.

Follow-up regimen:

  • 1 day after the procedure
  • 1 week after the procedure
  • 2 months after the procedure
  • 8 months after the procedure
  • 12 months after the procedure
