Femtolasik

Femtolasik

During the procedure, a corneal flap is formed with the world’s most state-of-the-art SCHWIND Atos laser system.

The use of a femtosecond laser increases the precision of corneal flap formation, which has a direct impact on recovery time and the range of visual defects that are possible to treat. In addition, with a femtosecond laser, certain anatomical factors (e.g. a very flat or convex cornea) are no longer contraindications to the procedure.

Benefits:

  • You will no longer need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
  • Your image will change for the better.
  • Since you will no longer need to wear contact lenses for many hours at a time, your risk of inflammation will be reduced.
  • You will gain a natural, full field of vision that is not distorted by eyeglass lenses.
  • You will have access to a wider range of careers (uniformed services).
  • You will be able to freely practice sports in which eyeglasses are cumbersome.

Benefits of the SCHWIND laser system:

  • Full control: it is possible to plan the procedure by adjusting the thickness, diameter and method of corneal flap formation.
  • Minimal risk of complications
  • Short procedure time
  • A wide range of treated defects

Evaluation for surgery

During an evaluation visit, the doctor will perform a full ophthalmic examination:

  • Your uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity will be determined for both eyes.
  • Eye drops will be administered which paralyse eye accommodation and dilate the pupils.

Important! You may have a blurred vision for a few hours after receiving the drops and you should not drive during that time.

  • Other eye conditions and systemic diseases will be excluded that may disqualify you from the procedure.
  • After reviewing your results, taking detailed measurements of your cornea (its shape, curvature and thickness) and determining your pupil size, your doctor will recommend a suitable type of surgery to you. This is the best time to bring up any uncertainties and doubts associated with the procedure with the ophthalmologist.

Evaluation for the procedure at the St. Adalbert’s Hospital consists of two stages: ophthalmic examination and optometric examination.
Based on the ophthalmic examination, the ophthalmologist determines the patient’s eligibility for a given laser vision correction procedure.

The optometric examination is used to establish precise values necessary for the planning of the laser procedure. The examination takes place on the day of the surgery.

Important!
You should not use your contact lenses for 7 days before the evaluation visit, since they affect the shape and condition of the cornea.

The procedure

  • The whole procedure takes only a few minutes. Laser treatment itself does not take more than 30-60 seconds.
  • You will not feel any pain due to the use of topical anaesthetic drops. You will not see any surgical instruments and you will focus your eyes on a special target that guarantees eye stability during surgery.
  • The procedure can be performed on both eyes during the same session.

Stage 1:

Preparation

The surgical site is prepared, and anaesthetic drops are administered into the eye. An eye speculum is applied.

Stage 2:

Femtosecond laser cutting

A precise femtosecond laser is used to create a corneal flap. The patient may feel slight pressure.

Stage 3:

Laser treatment

An excimer laser is used to shape the cornea as planned by the operator.

Stage 4:

Flap closure

The last stage involves closing the flap, which also works as a natural dressing.

After the procedure

  • Use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops as recommended by the doctor.
  • Use sunglasses when outdoors for about 3 months.

You will have your first follow-up examination immediately after the procedure.

You will spend a total of 2 hours in hospital on the day of the procedure.

You will be asked to fill in necessary documentation and an epidemiological history form. Subsequently, an optometric examination will be performed. After the examination, a nurse will prepare you for the procedure.

On the first few days after the procedure you should strictly follow your doctor’s instructions regarding medication and follow-up visits.

Follow-up regimen:

  • 1 day after the procedure
  • 1 week after the procedure
  • 2 months after the procedure
  • 8 months after the procedure
  • 12 months after the procedure
