Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction)

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

An increase in the size of male breast tissue, called gynecomastia, is becoming a more common aesthetic concern among adult men. The condition may be caused by hormonal disorders associated with excessive estrogen stimulation.
In selected cases the shape of male breasts may be surgically corrected.

Eligibility:

The decision on your surgery is taken during a pre-operative visit when a doctor assesses your eligibility. At the visit the doctor also chooses the treatment and orders necessary tests. The decision is made on the basis of test results and your general condition. Then a convenient date is selected.

Procedure:

During the skin-sparing procedure the glandular tissue is removed and the nipple and areola are left intact. This will ensure that the treated area looks like a normal male chest.
The procedure lasts for about 2 hours. You will stay in hospital for 1 day.

Can men develop breast cancer?

Yes. The glandular tissue which men have  also carries a risk of cancer. The incidence of breast cancer in men is about 100x lower than in women, which means that for every 100 breast cancer cases in women, there is 1 case of breast cancer in men. So if a man has enlarged breasts or a tumour-like lesion, a full diagnostic work-up must be done to rule out cancer.
