Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) repair surgery (enterocoele)

Recommended operative treatment:

  • repair/reconstruction of the pelvic floor using synthetic materials (different types of mesh depending on the pathology),
  • vaginoplasty and perineoplasty,
  • the Manchester operation,
  • midline and mediolateral vaginal suturing (enabling intercourse), frequently with simultaneous hysterectomy,
  • a combination of the above.

Before surgery:

Two weeks prior to the procedure, the following blood tests should be collected:

  • blood cell count,
  • electrolyte panel,
  • coagulation factors,
  • blood typing,
  • glucose test,
  • creatinine test,
  • HBsAg test,
  • anti-HCV antibody test.

About the procedure:

  • Pelvic floor repair is usually done via the vaginal approach under subarachnoid anaesthesia. Surgical repair techniques vary and depend on many factors including the extent of the pathology, patient age and preferences as well as therapeutic options.
  • The operation is carried out using patient’s own tissue or synthetic materials (mesh).
  • Sometimes it is necessary to perform a simultaneous hysterectomy (via the vaginal approach).
  • The procedure lasts about 45-90 minutes.

After surgery:

After the operation the patient stays about 1-3 days in the hospital.
