IUD insertion/removal

Indications:

The purpose of inserting an intrauterine device (IUD) into the uterus is to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
Hormonal IUDs (releasing levonorgestrel) have a curative effect – they help to minimise excessive bleeding from the uterus.

Before treatment:

Two weeks prior to the procedure, the following blood tests should be collected:

  • blood cell count,
  • electrolyte panel,
  • coagulation factors,
  • blood typing,
  • glucose test,
  • creatinine test,
  • HBsAg test,
  • anti-HCV antibody test.

About the procedure:

  • IUDs are usually inserted without anaesthesia but in some cases anaesthesia is indispensable (difficult anatomical conditions, extremely pain-sensitive patients).
  • IUDs are usually removed without anaesthesia. Exception to the rule include situations where traditional IUD removal methods fail, especially if IUD threads are not visible.
  • The procedure lasts about 5 minutes. The cost of the procedure does not include the price of the IUD.
