Carotid endarterectomy

Benefits:

The procedure prevents ischaemic brain strokes, 20% of which are caused by lesions in carotid arteries.

Indications and contraindications

  Indications
  • Symptoms of CNS ischaemia, such as loss of consciousness or vision disorders.
  • A history of ischaemic brain stroke associated with internal carotid artery stenosis.
  Contraindications
  • history of neck radiotherapy,
  • anatomic anomalies,
  • significant obesity.

Treatment options

Open or intravascular surgeries
The gold standard in the first-line treatment of internal carotid artery stenosis is an open procedure.

Eligibility:

On the basis of an ultrasound scan, MR angiography or CT angiography.

Procedure:

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. It lasts for about 1-1.5 hours.

After the procedure:

You will stay in hospital for 2 or 3 days, you can return to normal activity on the day after the procedure. Arterial blood pressure monitoring is important.
